Akai Oni Taisho Yoroi
The Akai Oni Taisho Samurai (red demon) would receive orders directly from the Daimyo Kai-Takeda and lead their Gashira and Kachi into combat, orchestrating their troop’s movements as if they where the hand of their Daimyo. The Aka Oni Taisho moved with ease, carefully orchestrating their troop’s movements in a deadly dance of victory and ultimately crushing their enemy. The Akai Oni were the elite troops. They were picked for the honor and heroism. Our Taisho suits are painted with a crimson suna or a glossy cinnabar red, a mineral used to show luxury and prominence.
The red yoroi worn by these elite troops gave them their name “Akai Oni” (Red Devils). After winning many battles the elite warriors of the Takeda Clan grew in notoriety and in number, and are remembered as some of the most famed and powerful clans of Feudal Japan. Ruling from the Kai Province for 400 years (12th to 16th century), the Takeda Clan were one of the most powerful families in the history of Japan. Their motto was “Loyalty and Fraternity”, and their Clan banner bore the words “fu rin ka zan” (wind, forest, fire, mountain), standing for “Swift as the Wind, Silent as the Forest, Intrusive as Fire, and Immovable as a Mountain”.
Iron Mountain Armoury is proud to present this fine reproduction of the armor of the Taisho vanguard of the Takeda Clan. It features Kiritsuke Iyozane (simulated scale), sode (shoulder guards) and kusazari (defensive skirt plating). Handcrafted by artisan katchû-shi (Japanese armor smith)m this Taisho Yoroi is crafted using a more traditional design and the most original artisan methods. This style is only possible by careful and laborious hand work and many years of experience by these crafters. We offer the options to change the style of the kabuto (helmet), menpō (mask) and suneate (shin guards). The standard colors of the Akai Oni Samurai Armor are “Shu” or red, with black lacing.
