Zatoichi Redwood Chokuto Shirasaya

Kobuse Laminated (1060 steel core / 1095 hard steel wrapped outer )

This shirasaya Ninja-to is handforged of ustilising the Kobuse method of lamination with a 1060 steel core combined with a 1095 carbon steel outer and is clay tempered with a beautiful custom hammon pattern & polished to show within the blade.

It is a gorgeous piece and inspired by the legendary fictional blind swordsman Zatoichi created by novelist Kan Shimozawa!!

The Shirasaya was traditionally used during the feudal period to store blades in times of peace or non conflict - as if kept in their battle saya, katana would over time gain moisture due to not being able to breathe through the lacquer and therefore rust faster.

These Shirasaya were used to mount the blades when times of war were not needed , to keep the blade in peak condition within the home during the rest period.

The blade pictured features a custom clay tempered hammon along the whole length of the blade and no bo-hi (lightening groove) making it a fuller feeling weighted blade, sharpened and live.

The Kobuse lamination method gives this blade a softer 1060 carbon steel core for flexibility and resistance along with a hard 1095 high carbon steel outer edge which helps with edge retention and excellent cutting.

The saya is absolutely beautiful and made completely of redwood which has been handcrafted & shaped to absolute perfection, the Tsuka featuring two mekugi pins to keep the blade tight.

This is a very refined looking Ninja-to Shirasaya that has very natural elements to it and is also available with bull horn fitting on the koiguchi and both tips of the saya and tsuka..
